and had a talent to beguile

(and you would doubt yourself, and fret,
and think that maybe he was right).

It didnt weigh on him at all
your perished hopes, your inner hurts,
and since it never was his fault,
he wasnt burdened with regrets.

He felt himself an honest guy
(within his limits it was true),
you liked his cool uncrumpled style
he made no promises to you.

Not inconvenienced by lies,
out of his mind he duly crossed
those who were sold on his disguise,
and took their chance on him--and lost.
