NOVEL
WOODY PAUL GREY
CHAPTER EIGHT. NEW WORLD FAMOUS BESTSELLER WRITER
Strange as it may seem, but after my meeting with Clark and the deal we made I felt myself completely different. It was so easy to write the second book. By the time I had finished it my friend published "his" first book and it was a great success.
Clark was so busy with conferences, interviews that we hardly found time for the meeting. Bernard Cameron Challenger, my friend`s pen name, made him very popular from the very beginning. He started to wear a thick, black beard, smoke a pipe, and wear a long, woolly scarf, not to mention a black wide-brimmed hat. His new image, successful and rapid literary career, mysterious background attracted to him women of different ages, but naturally he preferred the young ones. Very soon I realized that he didn`t need so much attention and could handle simple problems that appeared now and then I had concentrated my attention on the next. As I expected time has past and Clark, sorry, Bernard to believe that he is the author of the two published bestsellers which had a great success around the world. How did I feel about it? Normally, and, frankly I was so glad that I managed to help my real friend. I had no feelings towards the books as soon as they were published. It was a little weird, but still it was as it was. After the third book I had given him the key to the post box where I usually left the manuscripts. It goes without saying, that we were very cautious all the time, but we met less and less until I ad finished the last tenth book. I decided to give up the writing. Actually,I had said what I wanted to say. So, we decided to have the farewell meeting, but this time in downtown Manhattan in one of the restaurants in the Empire State Building. It should be pointed out that by that time Bernard got used to luxurious style of life and it was noticeable that in this extremely prestigious restaurant with its exclusive cuisine he felt as comfortable, as at home.
-" So, Bernard. What do you think of my idea to give up writing books?" -asked i anxiously.
-"Well, that`s your decision and I can only respect it. You`ve done much more than one could expect.
